Tyne Dock Enterprise Park Enabling Works

PORT OF TYNE, TYNE & WEAR

Back to Projects

Client: Port of Tyne

Project: The preparation of a vacant industrial site to make way for an Operating and Maintenance base for a new Offshore Wind Farm.

Cost: £1.45 M

The project was to prepare a vacant industrial site for the creation of an Operating and Maintenance Base for a new Offshore Wind Farm. The works included demolition, diversion of utilities, a new quay wall, mooring bollards and site levelling, with type 1 stone, to accommodate the future movements of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

The opportunity

The Port of Tyne is ideally located to serve the needs of the offshore wind industry; this site offers up to 7.1 hectares of land with Enterprise Zone status and 550 metres of direct riverside frontage. It is fully integrated with the existing infrastructure and in developing this site, the Port will be ready for potential offshore wind developments.

The challenge

The clearance of the site presented several challenges due to the presence of asbestos, existing utility services, working near the public highway and over water. The project also commenced one month before the first UK COVID-19 lockdown. The works were undertaken in several phases. Total Project Integration oversaw the various specialist contractors and provided regular progress and cost reports to the client. We also assisted the client in the preparation of applications for drawing down on local Enterprise Zone funding for the works, along with obtaining the relevant local authority approvals for the demolition works.

The outcome

Despite the COVID-19 lockdown, the project was safety executed and the site was left in readiness for the construction of a new offshore Operation and Maintenance Base.
