Demolition of The Former Unilever Foods Site

Back to Projects

Client: Private Developer

Project: The demolition of the buildings and equipment of a former margarine factory.

Cost: Confidential

The demolition of the buildings and equipment of a former margarine factory, covering an area of 5 hectares, including the disposal of contaminated materials such as asbestos, and the recycling/crushing of all hard materials for future use.

The opportunity

Clearing this site provided a unique opportunity for our client to gain an additional operational area of 5 hectares, which will allow greater flexibility for future operations on the site. It will also allow the client accessibility between existing operational areas which are currently separated by the former margarine factory.

The challenge

The site shares a boundary with an ongoing construction project, which is also being undertaken for the same client and is managed by Total Project Integration. Additionally, the site borders existing port and industrial operations which are ongoing during the works. Due to these constraints, daily stakeholder engagement is required; this includes meeting with the various construction and operational teams to ensure that the requirements of all interested parties are maintained. In addition, the size, scope and complexity of the works means that the programme spanned over every season and as such, close coordination with the appointed ecologist is being maintained at all times, particularly regarding nesting birds. Agreements have been made with the demolition contractor, during the works, to cease certain areas for nesting birds, with other areas being made available for demolition in order to allow the continuity of work and to maintain the overall programme duration.

The outcome

The project is predicted to be completed to programme. The works have progressed with a high level of health & safety compliance and minimal impact to ongoing site operations and other construction.
