A two-storey vertical extension to an existing student accommodation block, providing an additional 34 new units. The project includes underpinning within the existing basement to support the additional loads imposed and strengthening the existing floors.

The opportunity

To provide university students studying within London, high-quality and affordable accommodation.

The challenge

To carry out the construction works whilst the building was still occupied by students. In order to accelerate completion of the construction programme, two separate contracts were entered to provide the structural underpinning works and the vertical extension.

The outcome

The project will be completed in time for the new academic year and student intake. The scheme will provide students with quality rooms and in a location with great links to the rest of London.
