PORT OF TYNE, TYNE & WEAR

Back to Projects

Client: Port of Tyne

Project: Offshore wind base preparation at Port of Tyne.

Cost: £1.45 M

Enabling works delivered to prepare a riverside site for future offshore wind development at the Port of Tyne.

The opportunity

TPI was appointed to manage enabling works at a vacant industrial site within the Port of Tyne, supporting future offshore wind developments. The site, spanning 7.1 hectares with 550 metres of riverside frontage, required significant preparation to become a viable location for a new Operation and Maintenance Base. Works included site clearance, utility diversions, demolition, quay wall improvements, mooring bollards, and full ground levelling using type 1 stone to facilitate the movement of SPMTs.

The challenge

The team managed a complex environment involving asbestos clearance, live utility services, and proximity to both the public highway and the River Tyne. The project also began one month prior to the UK’s first COVID-19 lockdown, requiring phased delivery and ongoing adjustments. TPI coordinated multiple specialist contractors and supported the client with funding applications and local authority approvals, ensuring continuity despite pandemic-related disruptions.

The outcome

Despite the COVID-19 challenges and temporary suspension of some work packages, the project was delivered safely and effectively. The site was fully prepared for the next phase of offshore wind development, with all infrastructure works completed to a high standard and in line with Enterprise Zone requirements.
