Project: New-build recycling facility and process plant near Cambridge.

Cost: £8M

RIBA Project Stages: 0 -7

Construction and fit-out of a purpose-built materials recycling facility capable of processing up to 86,000 tonnes annually.

The opportunity

The project involved the construction of a new-build materials recovery facility for Amey, comprising a £4.2 million contract for the building and a £4 million process engineering fit-out. Works commenced in January 2012 and were completed on programme in December 2012, delivering a fully operational facility designed to support high-volume waste

The challenge

Delivering both the new-build construction and the specialist process fit-out within a tight programme required close coordination across multiple workstreams. Interfaces between the building contractor and engineering teams had to be carefully managed to avoid delays and ensure the smooth integration of equipment into the completed structure.

The outcome

The recycling facility successfully opened in December 2012 and remains in active operation. It features a wide range of automated sorting equipment capable of separating materials such as plastics, cardboard, metals and paper. The MRF continues to process around 86,000 tonnes of material annually and plays a key role in improving recycling rates and keeping the county at the forefront of sustainable waste management.
