Project: Modification to a Mechanical Treatment Area.

Cost: £8M

RIBA Project Stages: 0 - 7

325m sq  modification to the existing Mechanical Treatment Area to improve the performance of the existing two lanes and the addition of a new third lane in order to achieve the contract requirement for the processing of 200,000 tonnes per annum  of MBT Acceptable waste. Total Project Integration was appointed as project managers and cost consultants for AmeyCespa on this project.

The opportunity

The existing Mechanical Treatment equipment in the preparation hall was originally designed to process 47 tonnes per hour. This was insufficient to allow the processing of 200,000 tonnes per annum with a design availability of 85% required under the new contract. AmeyCespa had major concerns regarding both the performance of the MT and its ability to function for the duration of the contract.

The challenge

In order to accommodate the new equipment, structural changes to the building fabric were required. These changes included extensions to the reception hall to incorporate a new third input feed system and an extension of the preparation building into the service yard to relocate the skip station. Works were also required to dismantle and to relocate parts of the original treatment line; improvement in access arrangements to the equipment; redesign and relocation of the sprinkler system, including improving maintenance access; installation of local craneage to allow repair of preparation equipment.

The outcome

The refurbishment of the Mechanical Biological Treatment was successfully completed in 2014 and now this facility takes all of Cambridgeshire's residual waste, minimising the amount of recyclable material going to landfill.
