Upgrade of existing mechanical treatment plant, including building extensions and process enhancements to achieve contract waste throughput.

The opportunity

The existing mechanical treatment equipment in the Preparation Hall was originally designed to process 47 tonnes per hour, which was insufficient to meet the requirement of 200,000 tonnes per annum at 85% design availability. AmeyCespa raised concerns regarding the long-term capability and performance of the system under the revised contract. The project focused on improving throughput by modifying existing lines and introducing a new third treatment lane.

The challenge

To accommodate the new equipment, significant structural alterations were required. These included extending the Reception Hall for a new input feed system and expanding the preparation building into the service yard to relocate the skip station. Additional works involved dismantling and relocating parts of the original line, improving equipment access, redesigning the sprinkler system to enhance maintenance access, and installing local craneage to support ongoing repair and upkeep of the preparation equipment.

The outcome

The refurbishment of the Mechanical Biological Treatment facility was successfully completed in 2014. It now processes all of Cambridgeshire’s residual waste, significantly reducing the volume of recyclable material sent to landfill and supporting the county’s long-term sustainability targets.
