JAGS Community Music Centre

EAST DULWICH, LONDON

Back to Projects

Client: James Allen’s Girls’ School

Project: Activity space for a private girls' school theatre, assembly, music space, improved school reception, access and landscaping.

Cost: £7.5M

RIBA Project Stages: 0-7

The multi-use community space for James Allen’s Girls’ School, Dulwich included: a 500-capacity concert hall with flexible seating and staging; a teaching wing providing teaching and rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, multiple IT suites and additional office space; a combined new school entrance and foyer; landscaping works including a new playground and car parking.

The opportunity

The development provides a separate entrance for pupils, improving safety and security. The sympathetic design protects play areas and allows for additional landscaped areas. The need for music facilities and a desire to widen community involvement was at the heart of the school’s aims for this project.

The challenge

This was a highly complex and sensitive community project requiring ongoing management of stakeholders and interest groups in order to deliver the client brief while balancing cost and programme. A key driver was the delivery of construction within the school day, with minimum impact on the school operation, within a ‘live’ school environment.

The outcome

An integrated community project that will serve future generations of students and local residents.

“We are proud of our history of working with local schools, academies, arts groups and charities. This wonderful space has enhanced our ability to serve these groups. I’m delighted with the outcome and am grateful to the team at Total Project Integration for their commitment to our project and expertise in ensuring the project’s success.”
