Car Storage Facility

TYNE & WEAR

Client: Port of Tyne

Project: New secure car storage facility for the Port of Tyne

Cost: £2.5M

A 10-acre car storage extension delivering 3,143 new spaces with direct connectivity to the existing Tyne Car Terminal.

The opportunity

The Port required additional car storage and improved flexibility across both first and last points of rest. This project created 10 acres of new secure storage space, adding 3,143 parking bays and linking directly to the existing Tyne Car Terminal, enhancing operational efficiency across the site.

The challenge

Connecting the new and existing storage areas required overcoming physical separation by the River Don and an internal port road. A new culvert crossing was built over the inter-tidal river, subject to a Marine Management Organisation licence. The project remained live while operations continued, and end user changes brought significant scope revisions. TPI worked closely with the contractor to agree cost and time impacts, while adjusting phasing to enable early operational use of key areas.

The outcome

The project now successfully links the two storage zones, delivering the increased capacity and flexibility the Port required. TPI’s approach ensured operational disruption was minimised and stakeholder needs were met throughout, with clear reporting and collaborative planning supporting delivery.
