Eltham MP Clive Efford is urging the council to move quickly on the scheme,  which has a deadline for completion of next Christmas.

The council has secured funding from TfL for the major scheme to improve Eltham High Street, making it more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors.

Mr Efford said: “I have organised two public meetings myself over these proposals – both of which were standing room only.

“This shows how determined the local community is in coming together to improve our local town centre.

"In particular I am delighted that the council has listened to the concerns of local business and their customers, and has kept the free half-hour parking on the high street.

"People will now have the choice of either parking free for half an hour, or paying for the extra 30 minutes and staying for an hour.

The future for Eltham High Street

“Over the working day this will ensure that there is a constant supply of parking palaces becoming available.

“We are on a tight timescale – both to meet TfL’s deadlines and to ensure that the work is completed well before the Christmas 2016 period, which is such a vital period for businesses in the high street.

"There must be no delays in getting this project started.”

The high street revamp is in addition to other plans for Eltham which include a new cinema and restaurant.
